Tips, tricks, and ideas to reference for a simpler, stress-free life
Does it fit?
Battling with one’s weight is a common cause of stress and clutter. Having a closet filled with a combination of clothing that fits and clothing that doesn't can lead to major overwhelm.
A simplified wardrobe
I’ve read that the more decisions you make in the day, the weaker your decision-making ability becomes. Based on this information, the more you can simplify certain areas of your life, the better.
Ready for fall, y’all?
Now's the time to swap those warm-weather tank tops for comfy, cozy sweaters. While you're at it, it's a good time to assess which items of clothing you actually wore this season and which items stayed hidden away in your closet or drawer. And, as you review, stay curious and have fun.
How do you feel?
One question I often ask my clients when sorting and purging their clothing is, "how do you feel when you wear this?" Their initial reaction is usually a good indicator of their feelings about the item.
A story about purging clothing
When my client opened the door, I could see the stress all over her face. With a look of exhaustion, she told me things at work were incredibly busy, she was feeling a lot of pressure and working long hours.
Setting limits
When working to declutter and organize your closet and wardrobe, some people find it helpful to impose rules or limits on the number of items they own. Putting self-imposed limits in place around the amount of clothing one owns can be an easy way to simplify one’s wardrobe and end the constant wrestling of, “to keep or not to keep?”
Try a MAJOR closet purge
Does this scenario sounds familiar? Your alarm startles you out of bed. You drag yourself into the shower with hopes of becoming more alert. When finished, you stand in front of your clothes hoping a stylish, fashionable outfit will jump out of the closet and onto your body. When you realize this is an impossible feat, you rifle through the enormous pile of clothing on the floor in search of something...anything...that's clean and unwrinkled that you can throw together in a hurry so you're not THAT late for work.
Procrastination
Sometimes procrastination plays a role in a client’s disorganization. For example, they’ve got a pile of clothing lying on the floor of their closet that they need to take to their tailor for alterations. And that pile has been lying there for weeks or months, and now it’s grown to include other items of clothing that need to be washed, folded and/or hung up.
Clothing swap
When swapping out winter clothing for lighter spring/summer attire, it’s a great opportunity to perform a closet audit. Take a look at which items were never or rarely worn versus your go-to items and determine what you want to hold onto for future use versus what you can give away. Consider which items you love, which you kinda-sorta like, and which ones make you cringe, and sort accordingly.
Room to breathe
The primary closet can easily become overstuffed with clothing. I recently worked with a client who struggled with this issue.
